Sonoma Charter School History

In December of 1992, a group of teachers, parents and community members banded together to begin the creation of a charter school in the Sonoma Valley Unified School District. The group submitted their charter to the school board asking for sponsorship. The request was granted, subject to a development year to further define the operational details and goals of the school. A community-wide survey was then sent out, offering the opportunity for involvement. Five committees were set up to research and recommend school policies, educational objectives, facilities, information, networking and budgets. Five people were elected as an interim governing board to make decisions based on the work of the committees. In October of 1993, the school board voted to support the charter school, which opened in September of 1994 for students K-8th grade. Sonoma Charter School is the ninth charter school started in the state of California! As of fall of 2006, there are over 600!
